It was indeed a miracle that thirteen members of the Wild Boar Soccer Team were saved recently in July 2018 from being trapped in the flooded Cave of Sleeping Beauty, located in the Golden Triangle (near Chiang Rai in northern Thailand). The desperate and dangerous rescue attempts by the Thai government and international teams have brought people from all over the world together in love and earnest prayer for the safety of this team of young boys and their coach. Finally, after 18 days without food, all 13 were rescued, still in pretty good shape. This miracle has reminded me of another miracle when God called me and His faithful servants to start a mission training center a decade ago in Chiang Rai, right there where the Cave of Sleeping Beauty is located (only 20 minutes walk). Our mission is to bring Eternal Light, through God’s grace and the gospel of Jesus Christ, to the tens of thousands of young people in the Golden Triangle who are trapped in the “black hole” – a world of darkness full of drug addiction, illiteracy, poverty, homelessness, and despair. Now, a decade later, almost a hundred such youngsters, many of whom were orphans, coming from the 24 ethnic minorities in the Chiang Rai area, have been ministered to and trained to share their Christian faith with their fellow villagers in their own mother tongues. What a miracle! Only God can perform such a miracle – through His divine purpose, His grace and His power through the Holy Spirit. Who among us would respond to His calling by saying, “Here I am. Send me” (Isaiah 6:8)? Let us all be counted among His faithful. Together, in acts of love and in earnest prayer, we can fulfill the Great Commission. I invite you all to join us.

Vision of the Grace Foundation:
We are committed to having the same vision that Apostle John shares with us in Revelation 7:9-10, “ I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb…And they cried out in a loud voice: ‘Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb’.”
The word “vision” in Chinese is 異像. The word異has “field田” on the top, and “together 共” on the bottom. It reminds us that as long as we “work together” in cultivating the mission “field”, miracles will happen. In the past decade, since the founding of Grace Foundation by Pastor Stephen S. F. Lee, and the establishment of the Grace Mission Training Center in Mae Sai, Chiang Rai (the Golden Triangle), nearly a hundred “Christian soldiers” have been trained, some of whom have gone back to their own ethnic-minority communities and become preachers and teachers in their mother tongues, so that countless peoples with different languages can learn about Jesus Christ, the Son of God and the sacrificial Lamb for the salvation of mankind.
History of Grace Foundation:
Half a century ago, Pastor Stephen S.F. Lee swam across the sea from the China Mainland to Hong Kong…got free help by grace from a Western couple (including going to seminary), went to Canada, and eventually became a pastor and a church planter. It was in Canada that he first set up the Grace Foundation to provide accommodation for the elderly, but while he was in Thailand for a visit (that was more than 10 years ago), he came across the Golden Triangle, which borders on Thailand, Myanmar and Laos. This area used to be home for drug dealers and gangs, with a culture of drug addiction, pornography, and human trafficking permeating the whole area. But what Pastor Lee saw then, and had compassion for, were the many ethnic minority peoples living in this area who were bent on worshipping ancestors, ghosts and idols. It was clear that these unreached peoples desperately need the Lord.
Truly, the darkest place would need God’s divine Light to shine. Missionaries have come and gone in this area near Chiang Rai, Thailand. One of them, David Zhang, was an alumnus of Pastor Lee’s Seminary School in Hong Kong. More than 30 years ago, David Zhang arrived at the Golden Triangle on a white horse, and wherever he went, he set up shop on the streets to preach the gospel.
By God’s grace, Pastor Lee had a similar vision for the work laid before him. He recognized that this is a fertile missionary field. With like-minded Christians, he set up the Grace Missionary Training Center under Grace Foundation (Thailand), with a mission to minister to the orphans there by not only giving them a home, but also helping them to grow up into responsible individuals in their communities, bearing effective Christian witness to God’s grace.
This Grace Missionary Training Center is not a simple run-of-the-mill orphanage or missionary training center. It has a specific mission, i.e., to fulfill the vision of Apostle John as revealed in Revelation 7:9-10. Pastor Lee had read this passage many times before, but he did not realize until then that this vision was not only the last of Apostle John’s visions, but also the greatest. In it were the numerous peoples in white robes coming forward from different nations and speaking different languages to praise God and Jesus Christ, the sacrificial Lamb for the salvation of mankind. The Grace Missionary Training Center emphasizes not only Biblical training but also training in languages (Chinese, English, and Thai) as well as practical living skills (as teachers, barbers, farmers, poultrymen, pig breeders, etc) before sending forth these ethnic-minority youngsters as missionaries, so that they are equipped to be both preachers and teachers in their own villages, sharing the gospel with their fellow villagers in their own mother tongues, while being able to make a living on their own. As Pastor Lee so often points out, “I think this is the most effective method of training missionaries.” To this day, nearly 100 such youngsters (many of whom are orphans) have been trained. What a miracle! To God be the glory.
Currently, our founder, Pastor Lee is no longer actively pastoring in his advanced years, but he is never tired of continuing to serve the Lord and preparing the way for the Lord’s Second Coming.
The Grace Foundation model of training missionaries:
- Teaching them how to fish rather than giving them fish to eat. In other words, teaching them how to make a living on their own instead of continuously supporting their living expenses
- Emphasizes sharing the gospel in the same mother tongue among the many ethnic minorities in order to increase the effectiveness of faith conversion
Current Needs of the Grace Missionary Training Center
For the Grace Missionary Training Center, the cost of supporting 100 youngsters (in living expenses and learning) is around USD10,000 per month, i.e., around USD100 per person (not considering the initial cost outlay of building the facilities). We cannot do this alone. We call upon all church brothers and sisters to support us in prayer and whatever you can offer (your time or your gifts, be it spiritual or financial). Other than monetary donations, we welcome language teachers and people with practical skills, as well as healthcare providers such as physicians, nurses, dentists, and medical/dental assistants to donate their time and expertise to improve the health of the poor. As more ethnic-minority churches are planted, we also need architects, engineers, craftsmen, painters, and what not. So, stand up and be counted.2

The First Symposium on the Future of Grace Foundation ministry in Thailand: held in November 5-12, 2018 in Thailand
A Miracle in our backyard:
On June 24, 2018, just behind the Grace Mission Training Center in Mae Sai, Chiang Rai, Thailand, an event shook the whole world. Twelve teenagers in the Wild Boar soccer team and their coach were trapped in the flooded Cave of the Sleeping Beauty, without any way to get out and without any food supply. The Thai government devoted full national efforts to rescue them, and international rescue teams volunteered to help. One international diver died in the process. For many days, the whole world was united together in a spirit of love and in prayer for the safety of these 13. Finally, they were rescued after 18 days, and still in pretty good shape. Hope was all they had to feed on.
The story of this rescue has many twists and turns: hope alternating with disappointment; tough decisions had to be made on possible routes of rescue; bearing the sacrificial loss of life in one rescuer; racing against time, etc. The Media Evangelism Ltd. from Hong Kong is interested in producing a movie titled “ Miracle of Rescuing 13” based on this true story, with the hope of impressing the general public on how great our God is in the salvation of mankind.
Pastor Lee has been very supportive of this project when he learned about it. He pointed out, “Many movies are fictional, but ‘Miracle of Rescuing 13’ is based on a script written by God’s own finger, just as the Ten Commandments in the Old Testament were written by His finger on tablets of stone. In the New Testament, Jesus similarly wrote with His finger on the sand when confronted with what punishment should be doled out to an adulteress. I believe that ‘Miracle of Rescuing 13’ is not a human act, but a divine one, with God writing the script in this drama of love and divine power.” The modern world based on human reason is naturally skeptical of miracles, thinking that miracles only happen in the Bible, but Pastor Lee disagrees. “No, it’s not like that. Mark 16:17 says of signs and miracles, ‘These signs shall follow them that believe.’ In other words, if you don’t believe, miracles will not happen. That is the truth.”
The central message of this movie is evangelism, reflecting the gospel message of salvation, narrating how countless ethnic-minority youngsters can be rescued from the “black hole” of drugs, gambling, alcohol, illiteracy, and suffering through divine grace and power of the gospel. The movie production team will be building sets at the Grace Mission Training Center, casting the youngsters from the Center as actors, and staying in the Guest House during the filming process.
Fund Raising for the Movie and for the Grace Mission Training Center :
We earnestly hope that our Christian brothers and sisters in various churches can encourage their mother church to consider adopting an ethnic-minority people before the Symposium (or shortly after). The movie itself will need USD 70,000 to see it to fruition. In addition, experience has shown to us that we need USD100,000 to set up one ethnic-minority church.
Should you feel so inclined, we suggest that pledges can be varied in the following categories: gold brick (pledge of $10,000); silver brick (pledge of $8,000); copper brick (pledge of $5,000); tin brick (pledge of $3,000); stone brick (pledge of $1,000); or gravel (pledge of $100). Bricks and gravels are all indispensable building material, be it a physical church building or a community of like-minded believers. From these churches will come missionaries, and the gospel of Jesus Christ will go forth from this Grace Mission Training Center, which is just a small piece among the many miracles that our God has made possible. We need your prayers, your time, your gifts, and your bricks/gravel to build up the Kingdom of God. Believe, and miracles will happen.
Currently, there are 24 rooms in the Guest House at the Grace Mission Training Center, representing the 24 different ethnic minorities in the Golden Triangle. These rooms have not been named as yet. It is hoped that there will be enough churches, groups or individuals to adopt these ethnic minorities, so that these rooms can have the donors’ names inscribed on the doors. Donors can enjoy free accommodation in any one of these rooms for 4 weeks each year, with the freedom to allocate their own guests (by working with Reception Desk). In addition, the Media Evangelism Ltd. will also provide each donor with a free DVD to give individual testimony to God’s grace (be it personal, or as a group). These testimonies on DVDs can be stored in the planned Memorial Hall for viewing and remembrance.
Progress in the adoption of ethnic minorities:
- Grace Christian Chapel in Vancouver, Canada would likely adopt the Akha ethnic minority and work towards establishing an Akha Church in Mae Sai.
- The Media Evangelism Ltd. In Hong Kong is considering the adoption of the Va minority, and plan to send field workers annually to the Va village(s) in Northern Thailand on short-term missions.
- Pastor Enoch Lin’s church is planning to adopt the Miao in Northern Thailand.
We hope that more churches can adopt these minority peoples and through prayers and contributions, help these peoples to know Christ and become useful members of society as well as faithful followers of Christ.
We need more workers in this mission field:
We are seeing more churches becoming committed to short-term missions. The opportunities available here in the Grace Mission Training Center will be most meaningful in this light. When you come to visit us, you can have a live experience with children and youngsters from 24 ethnic minorities who speak different languages. As you live among them, you can build relationships through teaching them English or Chinese, as well as training them in computer skills, photography, accounting, instrumental and vocal music, etc. so that they can pass on their skills to their own villagers while sharing the gospel with them in their own mother tongues. Such prospects are future missionaries. As part of the Nurturing Global Leaders NGL, two female students from the University of Hong Kong, Catherine Chan and Caty Chan, came to Grace Foundation in Thailand to teach English for two summer months in 2018. Their dedication was much appreciated. They felt that they did not contribute much, but they were blessed in many ways (refer to HKU NGL2018 Mae Sai video excerpt in Appendix ). We hope that more Christians will come to visit us and know from first-hand experience what missionaries do. In Matthew 28: 19-20，Jesus gave us the Great Commission, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Peace to you, my beloved brothers and sisters in Christ. Praise God for His unspeakable grace and abundant gifts year after year, and great is His faithfulness and compassion that see us through every day of our lives. The beginning of 2018 sees the fifth year of Grace Foundation’s ministry in northern Thailand: it will be the fifth year of our Grace Thanksgiving Church and Grace Student Center (dormitory); the third year of our Grace Chinese School; and the second year of our Grace Discipleship Training Center. And, along the way, I (Deborah Lee) have been serving here for five years! It is neither too long nor too short a period. It is so full of God’s grace that I have so much to give thanks for:
1. There are, at the present time, six daughter churches under our mother church – Grace Church: five are in Chiangrai (Northern Thailand) and one in Southern Thailand (Grace Bao-wen 寶文Church).
1) Grace Thanksgiving Church in Maesai: morning worship in Chinese and Thai; afternoon worship in Chinese and Burmese. Five years standing.
2) Grace Paradise Church in downtown Maesai: worship in Thai. One year standing.
3) Grace Horizon Church in hilly Chiangrai: worship in Lahu language. Five years standing.
4) Grace Canaan Church in hilly Chiangrai: worship in Va language. Five years standing.
5) Grace Providence Church in hilly Chiangrai: worship in Aka language.
6) Grace Bao-wen Church in Southern Thailand: worship in Chinese. Five years standing.
Praise God, all six churches have ministers, with their living expenses supported by Grace Foundation so that they can serve wholeheartedly according to their God-given gifts and talents.
2. Grace Student Center (Dormitory):
From 2013 to 2018, close to a hundred students have stayed in this center. They came from all parts of Thailand, from rural villages in the hills to urban areas. The reasons why they came were similar. Some came from single-parent families, some with divorced parents, and some even didn’t know who their parents were. Most of them were poor, but did’t want to give up their studies easily. They knew that good education can bring their families out of poverty. Through God‘s grace, they have become part of the family of God.
At Grace Student Center, different students require different levels of care. Other than providing them with hot meals three times a day, and bussing them back and forth to school, provision is also necessary to cover their student fees. These subsidies for the needy are not small sums. Again, God has provided, so that these poor children in the Golden Triangle can have a good education: securing the chance to come out of poverty; knowing God through reading the Bible; and effecting changes in their own families. I truly believe that God will, through His many faithful servants, bring this to fruition.
3. Grace Chinese School
More and more students are living in the Student Center (dormitory) as the years go by, three years at the shortest, and six years or more at the longest. Because of this, Chinese lessons can no longer be fly-by-night tutorials at the whim of the teachers, but require a rigid set of courses, so that students can learn in an orderly fashion from basics to advance. Hence, we have invited the Overseas Chinese Committee of Taiwan to help. They warmly accepted our request and provided us with textbooks every year according to our needs. Praise God! Over the past three years, the Committee has also regularly sent Taiwan’s ambassador to Thailand to come to visit our Chinese School. Our improved Chinese program has also drawn students from the vicinity, other than those living in our Student Center. We teach Chinese from Monday to Thursday. On Fridays, we have outings: consisting of music (playing and singing gospel music and songs) and creative games. Our students really like them, as they look forward to every Friday. It’s a good way of evangelism. With our activities in the Chinese School, we also invite parents to attend. On the average, we have two to three chances a year to hold evangelistic meetings.
4. Grace Discipleship Training Center
Praise God, we have finally come to the point where our vision of God’s grace has led us to start this ministry. Our vision follows that of Apostle John, i.e. ” to make disciples of every kindred, every tongue, every people, and every nation so that they can return to their own, and be empowered by the Holy Spirit and the love of Christ to fulfill the Great Commission.“ Grace Foundation’s ministry here has brought in many fruits; so has discipleship training. We never cease to be amazed by what God has purposed and fashioned with His hands. God truly fulfills every one of our needs. In May 2016, we officially started discipleship training. In the first class, there were 20 teenagers from Thailand and Myanmar at the time. They all had a desire to seek God. They yearned for a chance to learn, including the Bible. They even aspired to learn theology in Seminary, nourishing their desire to serve God, even though it was not easy for them. Grace Foundation has tried to help them realize their dream of equipping and enriching themselves, and at the same time, learning to be true to themselves, seeking God’s holiness and goodness. Some of our students have accomplished that dream. Through God’s grace, we now have 35 students from Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam in this training program, which is only in the second year. There are many ethnic minorities among them. To accommodate their language needs, we have several departments: Chinese, Burmese and Thai. Truly we deserve the name “Grace Missionary Training Center in the Golden Triangle”. Our teachers can be local (coming from Northern Thailand) or from outside our local area. Our course of instruction follows that of a general theological course. Although our students vary in their biblical knowledge, languages, and learning ability, they welcome the chance to study together and to spur one another on to fulfill their dreams, praise God!
The following is a description of our discipleship training in terms of concept and nature of the actual learning situation:
1. Learning Thai language – No matter where the students come from, they are all required to learn Thai, since the Grace Foundation is located in Thailand, and after all, Thailand is central to Myanmar and Laos. It is a good idea for them to learn the Thai language, so that whether they stay or choose to return to their own country, at least they have increased their choices. The Thai government has particularly sent teachers here to set up an adult education program, enabling those who missed school in their childhood to graduate in six years. This is a wonderful opportunity for the youngsters here to catch up on their education.
2. Learning Chinese, which is compulsory – this is Grace Foundation’s idea, no matter where the students come from. They have an opportunity to learn Chinese in a step-by-step curriculum. We make available primary school all the way to junior high school. Beyond that, students will be sent to night schools in urban areas to finish senior high school.
3. Learning music – This is very attractive to modern teenagers. This modern day era of high technology offers less and less commendable pastimes to our young people, be it in big cities or in rural areas. Playing electronic games on mobile phones has become a chronic addiction, taking away interpersonal relationships and family togetherness and warmth. Almost every youngster is staring down at their mobile screens. But thank God, He has also left us with music, which can still attract people of different ages to participate and enjoy, especially young people. So, we teach them play different kinds of music instruments, such as piano, guitar, drum, etc. and teach them how to dance and sing in choruses, etc. Wait! They have a choice here. They can choose singing or dancing or playing whatever instrument they fancy, and as much as they like in their spare time here.
4. Learning the Bible through our Discipleship Training Center – it is our ultimate goal to provide discipleship training. In this postmodern era, it is very difficult for young people to know God, worship God and serving God. So we start with meeting the actual needs and preferences of young people. We spend most of the day in learning the Bible. On the average, we spend five hours every day to learn the Word of God. We believe that the Gospel of Jesus Christ not only saves, but also changes people’s lives. Whereas human teachings are often weak and limited, God’s Word is most powerful. If only we could take hold of the time we have with the young people and nurture them with God’s Word, God will take care of them no matter what difficulty may lie ahead.
5. Field learning – The students don’t just learn in classrooms, but also have field trips in which they can share the gospel in many remote villages and mountainous areas. Every Christmas, we go to various churches in Northern Thailand and Myanmar to celebrate Christmas with them with music and preaching. The trainees also did their part, using dance, poetry, drama, crafts (such as free haircuts!) or acupuncture to contribute to the success of these visits, which naturally cannot do without sharing the Bible stories with the children. During the holidays, some students go to mountainous areas to be teaching assistants. They spend time with the local villagers, teach their young people how to play the guitar, sing with them, and teach them Chinese every day. This is a great opportunity for students to experience what it is like to share their faith with others.
6. After completing such a study program, the students will choose their own paths. If they feel the call to serve the Lord, they will be sent to seminary study in either Thai-Chinese or Myanmar theological schools, after which they may elect to return to Grace Church to serve in the appropriate departments. Some of them may want to go on to university and come back to participate in the work of the Foundation. Of course, there are also those who prefer to stay on to serve in Grace Foundation after they have graduated, because the Foundation has a wide range of work opportunities, enough for more young people to participate and serve. Henceforth, discipleship training center does not only give young people many opportunities to learn, but also to serve at Grace Foundation. This year, in 2018, four students will graduate from high schools: two from Thai high schools and two from Chinese high schools. Out of these four, two have decided to go to seminary and the other two to Thai university.
A. Mr. Jia-Fa Li. After graduating from high school, he plans to enter Bethel Bible Institue in Chiangrai, Thailand, to study for a Bachelor of Theology degree in four years time. After that, he plans on returning to Grace Foundation to serve.
B. Ms. En-Yu Li. After graduating from Thai high school, she plans on going to Thailand Baptist Theological Seminary (TBTS) in Bangkok for her Bachelor of Theology degree. After graduation, she will return to Grace Foundation to serve in the Thai language department.

C. Mr. Li-Bao Wang. After graduating from Thai high school, he plans to enroll in a correspondence course at the Bangkok University, while he stays in Grace Foundation to serve and pursue a study in a Chinese Senior high school.
D. Ms. En-xin Li. After graduating from Thai high school, she plans on enrolling in a correspondence course at Bangkok University, while continuing to teach Chinese at Grace Foundation and serving in the Grace Student Center.

7. Special Opportunities – In addition to the above, we also choose some promising students who are eager to learn and serve God to go abroad during the holidays to study English, which is, like Chinese, also an asset. Naw Paul Lay is a student from Myanmar who is studying here in the Burmese department. God has given her a wonderful gift, playing the guitar and singing well. Besides, she is very keen on God’s Word. She hopes to visit Singapore for two months during the holidays. Not only can she get in touch with the Myanmar churches abroad, but she can also learn English abroad, which is a great breakthrough for her.
At Grace Foundation, the ministries are expanding and coming together. In terms of co-workers, we have an increasing need in the teaching and management ministries (be it Chinese, Thai or Burmese)，such as the Discipleship Training Center, the Chinese School, the Grace Student Center (dormitory), our churches, and our farming department. This brings me to an important point: our future challenge is to cultivate our collegiate relationships, provide enough support to our students and co-workers, and open their eyes to a wide range of vision and choices. I really hope that more brothers and sisters in Christ from Thailand and abroad will participate in this multifaceted ministry. Its strength lies in diversity and youthfulness. In the near future, these young people will take up the torch and move Grace Foundation forward in the fulfillment of our mission. They may be students now, but they will be the future leaders as they steer the ministry of Grace Foundation to bring God all the glory. I believe this is how God wants it.
Prayer Requests:
1. During the upcoming holiday, the Student Centre has to be closed because we failed to plan ahead to keep it open. Students will have to go back to their families (if they still have families). Pray that they would do alright in the next two months, enjoy their family gatherings, or be able to serve at nearby church(es). Pray that God will bless them with a most meaningful holiday.
2. During the holiday, the Discipleship Training Center will still be open. Some students will have the opportunity to train church leaders in the mountainous areas and lead the children and adolescents camp, while some other students will help in the farm. Please pray for God’s support and strength for these students in their ministries.
3. At present, the Grace Foundation Guest House in Maesai, Chiangrai is still under construction. Please pray that God will grant us peace, as we await its completion on time.
4. Pray that God will grant strength and wisdom to our co-workers and students working in the Grace Foundation Farm, so that the farm can supply what we need while providing an opportunity for the students to learn how to make a living.
5. Pray that God will provide for the needs of the four above-mentioned students, as they start applying to their seminaries or universities during the holiday. Pray that they will be able to have sufficient funds to pay for the tuition, and pray that more brothers and sisters in Christ will extend a hand of support in this regard.
6. Pray for more soldiers of Christ in this coming new generation! Pray that God Himself will lead more young people to know Christ and study His Word, so that they will be well equipped for the Kingdom’s work.
7. God has led us for the past five years. Pray that God will continue to lead us forward in the years to come. For all the work that has been accomplished through God’s grace, pray that God will continue to keep them and bless them. For what is to come, pray that God will give us strength and wisdom, so that what we do can bring Him glory and be pleasing to His eyes.
